Jo Hamilton

Jo Hamilton is a Scottish-born artist currently living and working in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in the 1990s with a degree in drawing and painting before moving to the United States. A decade ago she traded paint and a brush for yarn and a hook. She creates her large scale works one knot at a time using no graphs or patterns.  She looks, she works, she unravels and reworks until she sees the substance of a representation in her knots. The knotted yarn, so familiar in everyday life, takes the place of paint and allows her to examine the categories and conventions of western fine art as well as traditional craft, and to reinvent them. Her subjects range from portraits to cityscapes, giant male nudes and mysterious masked women. Her work has been shown in Portland, Seattle, New York, Washington D.C. and Paris.

Beginning with a survey of Japanese classical design- simple, timeless shapes- we cover a wide range of creative concepts: how to maximize design while minimizing waste in fabric; how to make easy to wear, comfortable clothing; how to design fashions to create the most impact in the market place.
All of this is done through analyzing the common denominators of what is known as “ethnic” clothing.  In addition to the Japanese, we take a close look classical Chinese, South American, African, and Middle Eastern drape to arrive at the basics of simple design for a modern Western life style.
Once the basics have been covered, John will introduce the concepts behind his own unique designs.  Followed by one-on-one work with each student, you will be able to create simple, basic templates for your own creations, allowing participants to leave with a large assortment of designs with which to begin their own collections.

In Thread, we use a sewing machine to work with Solvy, a water-soluble substrate, to create ephemeral drawings and collages. This is a magical technique which can be done with little or no sewing experience. The workshop is open to those who have never done the technique, as well as those who have previous experience and want to perfect their skills or work on more complex projects

Whether you’re an artist, writer, gardener, naturalist, skinny dipper, or day tripper, our relationships with nature are vital to the understanding of our world and ourselves. It is the connection of place that can drive and influence creativity of all kinds. For 2 days we will engage nature by listening, watching, and gathering items of the land which will then be bound, stitched, woven, assembled, painted and transformed into vessels, talismans, or journals. While all materials will be provided, students are highly encouraged to bring their own collections of nature, paper, threads or artworks that can be taken apart, added to, reassembled, transformed or used for embellishment.  Limited to 12 students.

Registration starts on September 14, 2016 at 9:00 am

Please register at the meeting or send in your registration postmarked no earlier than September 14, 2016
